it's last design update in 2002, the YZFR1 for 2004 enters its 3rd generation
for its next 2 year reign.

new 3rd Generation 1000cc YZF-R1 highlights the...
You're looking at what Yamaha says they're learned in 50 years of competition.
It begins with anew third-generation, 998cc, liquid-cooled, short-stroke,
20-valve, in-line four-cylinder engine designed to make 180 horsepower
power at a stratospheric 12,500 rpm. The shorter cylinder head is re-angled
farther forward to 40 degrees, far enough forward to allow the main
frame spars to go over the engine instead of around it.
straighter load path makes the Deltabox V frame massively strong,
even as it makes the bike narrow to better fit the rider. Together
with its light, strong and long Controlled Fill die cast truss
swingarm, all that power is deployed to the pavement with the
help of a fully adjustable piggyback shock absorber.
exhaust with Yamaha's lightweight Exhaust Ultimate Powervalve
(EXUP) is routed under the seat for greater mass centralization.
56 degrees of cornering clearance is a good thing too.
wheels at both ends are light to spool up fast. Radial-mount forged
calipers and 320mm discs provide outstanding braking performance
for bending controllably into tight chicanes at the end of long,

Something old, something new, something blue? Newly redesigned for 2003
from the ground up, the 2004 YZF-R6 just gets minor revisions midway thru
its 2-year design cycle. Still, if you never let the YZF-R6's tachometer
needle roam into the second half of its arc, you might never know what's
lurking there waiting to be unleashed. And... here's what's new for 2004.
An ingenious suction-piston
fuel injection system (re-mapped for '04), among other things, endows
it with amazingly goodroad manners at low and medium engine speeds.
But we had a higher calling in mind for the little beast that won the
AMA Supersport Class Championship** right out of the gate as well as

A 15,500 rpm redline.
Redesigned exhaust canister providing improved exhaust flow for 2004.
This one is pure sportbike, designed from the asphalt up to achieve
a delicate, sublime blend of handling and horsepower, finesse and feel,
hyperactive agility and laser-beam predictability.
technology takes tangible form in the R6's light and rigid DeltaBox
III frame - an almost seamless pieceof alloy artisanship that allowed
the engineers to put strength - and the revvy 4-cylinder - exactly where
they belong. From there, all sorts of good things flow.
