Her coach and father, Robert Landsdorp, had to leave her mother behind, as he brought Maria to America on a shoolastic Visa at age 6 to enroll her in a Tennis Academemy in Bradenton, Florida, to advance her career in tennis. Her father was broke and had to work at odd jobs to keep her in school, and they had to live apart, with Maria living in the school's dormitory where she was harassed by the older students. It would be 3 more years before her mother would be allowed to join them in America.

Maria Sharapova beats Serena Williams in WTA Championships final
Monday 15 November, 2004
Los Angeles - Maria Sharapova was distracted by Serena Williams' injury-induced weakened serves. Just two games from ending the season in defeat, the Wimbledon winner focused on holding her own serve.

With that strategy, Sharapova overcame the early third-set mental lapse and managed to beat Williams to take the WTA Championships title 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Monday night in a rematch of their Wimbledon final.

The then 17-year-old Russianrose to a career high No. 4 when the year-end WTA rankings are released on Tuesday.
"I don't think I could've asked for anything better this year," Sharapova said. "It's been an extraordinary year for me. I know that I'm not showing a lot of emotion, but I'm sort of just speechless."

Already in July, Sharapova stunned Williams for the Wimbledon title ; that propelled the blond teenager to instant stardom. She finished the year with 5 titles.

In the second set, Williams trailed 5-2 then called for a trainer after straining her abdominal muscle. The injury affected Serena Williams' serve.

"After she got the medical treatment, I could tell that she had problems serving, but on the groundstrokes she was just teeing off on everything," Sharapova said. "Beside her serve, she didn't look injured once she was playing, so she was actually being really tough. I couldn't capitalize on the weak serves that she hit."

Williams even left the court for a few minutes and returned to have her serve broken in losing the set 6-2.

"She figured that she can't really do anything from her serve so she had to hit everything as hard as she could and that's exactly what she did," Sharapova said. "There was just not too much I could do. I just tried to find a little opening and get back in there."

Sharapova won $1 million for the second major title of her career. She also received an SUV worth $56,300.
She said she planned to give the car or proceeds from its sale to the survivors of the September hostage-taking in Russia that left more than 300 people dead, half of them children.
