Should I stay or should I go? Actress Penelope Cruz is caught with her pants down in the 2007 Pirelli calendar.
Pirelli's 2007 Calendar
London, Nov 16th 2006 - The much anticipated next edition 2007 Pirelli Calendar was presented to invited guests and media at Battersea Evolution Park in London this evening. The stars of this edition are four of Hollywood's hottest new actresses, one old one and one newcomer: contemporary starlets Penelope Cruz, Hilary Swank, and Naomi Watts, beloved Italian actress Sophia Loren from the 1960s, with daring newcomer Lou Dillon who is the only actress to actually appear topless in the Calendar.
The 2007 Calendar marks a questionable turning point from most recent years: the glamour and creative style that characterized recent editions is missing. This year is a move to over simplicity with a film set that looks like it was all shot in a cheap hotel room in one evening, with no makeup, styling or decent lighting. Pirelli proclaims they are returning to the simplicity of the 1960s as stylized in the classic foreign films of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonino. The use of 70 year old Sophia Loren in the Calendar is their direct link to that era, and while Sophia still looks great for her age, using the very former Italian goddess fully clothed in tight head shots in a sexy pinup calendar certainly brings the entire project to a quick halt with skid marks all over the road.
The calendar is photographed by the Dutch duo of Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadlin in California.
The concept was to "...portray five women and their profound, secret stories revealing their most private and hidden souls." In fact it was all shot in just one bed with one sheet. The two photographers were hired for their reputation for incredible photo spreads in Vogue America, France and Italy: W magazine, and top adverting campaigns for Calvin Klein, Christian Dior and Este Lauder among many.
Most years the Pirelli Calendar does confirm its reputation as the most celebrated and artistic pinup calendar in the world. And other years you are left wondering "What's the Point?" The new 2007 Calendar is one of the disappointing years. The celebrity actresses don't look sexy or enticing, they look very bored and very overly paid for doing nothing (not even leaving Hollywood). Nothing in their souls is revealed. And it's photographed like some amateur took the photos with a pocket digital after everyone had a hard night of partying. This year it looks like Pirelli Calendar managed to masturbate away $2 million without getting anyone off but themselves.
Naomi Watts can't believe she's being paid so much just to sit there in a sleezy motel in Hollywood..

Brief History of a Legend
The Pirelli Calendar dates back to 1964 when the Marketing Department of Pirelli Ltd in the UK decided to issue a Calendar for their top U.K. customers as a gift for the closing year. In fact the Pirelli Calendar project had been born one year earlier, in 1963 with Terence Donovan, but had not met the approval of Pirelli's managers. However for 1964 the pictures were so beautiful that the new calendar was released for distribution and the success on the media was immediate.
Over a period of more than 30 years the Pirelli Calendars have shaken the media world with their audacity, innovation and spectacular imagery. The Calendar was very much a product of the cultural revolution which inspired a new sensuality, a new appreciation of the female form and, above all, an urgent need to break taboos. In the sixties a tidal wave of creative energy swept through rock music, fashion, films and photography, and the stuffiness and austerity of post-war London quickly surrendered to a new vitality which turned the city into the style capital of the world. At the same time a tyre manufacturer with a foreign name shot to fame outside Italy with an annual PR extravaganza which became coveted by students, cabinet ministers, royalties and superstars alike. An idea of creative genius became a printed icon for each year, spawned many inferior imitations and stretched the parameters of sensual fantasy and fabulous photography. The Pirelli Calendar has redefined the rules of glamorous photography; by tradition calendars were hung on garage walls - now they hang in museums, and Pirelli have gone on redefining those rules year after year. Its twelve leaves were - and still are - awaited with enthusiastic anticipation.
The aim of the Calendar is to produce through the photographer's creativity a theme and a set of pictures of high artistic level: its exclusivity was planned and carefully maintained by Pirelli.
Pirelli Calendars Online
The launch of the 2006 calendar coincides with the launch of www.pirellical.com, the new portal devoted to the Cal that presents 42 years of the history of photogrpahy. Three years from the launch of the first official website, the legend of the Pirelli Calendar is also renewed online with new and exclusive contents. The only disappointment is that we can't enjoy the photos online or in available Pirelli Calendar books, in the beautiful large formats and high quality printing in which they origionally appeared in the calendars.
