2014 Eni SBK World Superbike Championship, Donnington, GB Round 5 of 13

Brilliant Donnington World Superbike Double 1-2 For Kawasaki's Sykes And Baz
WSBK, Donington, UK, 25 May 2014 - Tom Sykes and his Kawasaki Racing Team partner Loris Baz proved too strong for their opponents at Tom’s home round today, with Tom winning both 23-lap races and Baz second in each. David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team SBK Evo) also won both Evo category races, by finishing overall tenth in each World Superbike race at Donington in England, today.

WSBK in the heart of England for the UK Round
Preview Wednesday 21 May 2014 - Donington Park will host Round 5 of the 2014 eni FIM Superbike World Championship this weekend. This will be the 22nd time the Superbikes will hit the Leicestershire track, the first of which dates back to April 3rd 1988, when it all started. The first ever event in the history of the series saw local rider Roger Burnett (Honda) taking pole position, while the two races were won by Italians Davide Tardozzi (Bimota) and Marco Lucchinelli (Ducati).

The current layout of Donington Park features a fast, flowing first half of the track and a heavy braking, stop-and-go second one, which make it difficult for teams and riders to find a good overall setup for their bikes.

Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was the absolute master of last year’s event by winning the Tissot-Superpole and both races in dominant fashion in front of his home crowd, as well as setting a new lap record and a best lap for the track. Sykes’ teammate Loris Baz made his WSBK debut at Donington Park two years ago, when he replaced the injured Joan Lascorz.

At the moment Sykes and Baz lie second and fourth in the standings, respectively, behind new leader Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike). The Ulsterman is hoping to keep his winning streak alive, as he stood atop the podium in the last three encounters. Rea has already been victorious at Donington Park (2012, Race 2), at the end of one of the most incredible and unpredictable races of all times. Local rider Leon Haslam from Derby is hoping to step up his game after the good progress made in the one day, post-race official test at Imola last week.

Aprilia Racing Team’s Sylvain Guintoli and Marco Melandri have enjoyed good results at Donington Park in recent years, with the Frenchman twice on the podium in 2013 and the Italian rider able to score two wins (2011 and 2012, Race 1) and two second places (2011 Race 2, 2013 Race 1).

There have been no top 3 finishes so far at Donington Park in WSBK for the Ducati Superbike Team duo
Davide Giugliano and Chaz Davies, as the best result was a fourth place claimed by the Italian rider last year, in Race 2. Davies, on the other hand, was edged out by Luca Scassa for the win in the World Supersport race in 2011.

The whole Voltcom Crescent Suzuki Team is looking forward to their home round, with Eugene Laverty and Alex Lowes aiming to get back on podium form after a difficult round at Imola. The only podium finish for Laverty at Donington Park came last year in Race 2, as the Irishman on an Aprilia was third behind Sykes and Guintoli. Lowes dominated last year’s BSB round by edging out his main rival for the title Shane Byrne in both races. Back in 2008, the 23 year old from Lincoln scored his first podium finish at international level here by crossing the line second in the STK600 encounter.

MV Agusta RC – Yakhnich Motorsport and Team Hero EBR will continue their learning curve within the Superbike World Championship at Donington Park.

Leon Camier is looking forward to his home round, which he will contest aboard the EVO-spec BMW S1000RR of the BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team, once again as substitute rider for the injured Sylvain Barrier. The battle for supremacy in the EVO class will see David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Team Ducati), like the rest of the field, aiming again for top honours in the new category.

Sykes Lays Down the Gauntlet on Opening Day

Donington (Great Britain), Friday 23 May 2014 - After being in the top three all day, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) posted a series of 1.27 laps to round out the opening day on top at an overcast Donington Park. The reigning Champion was within half a second of his own outright circuit record and he takes an advantage of almost a quarter of a second into tomorrow.

Behind Sykes, the top ten in the combined three session classification, and therefore automatically into Tissot-Superpole 2 are as follows: Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team), Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team), Loris Baz, Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team), Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Pata Honda duo Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team), and Chaz Davies.

The EVO standings were once again headed by Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati) who was 11th overall. Leon Camier (BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team) left it until FP3 to show his real potential moving into 12th overall just behind the flying Italian rider.

Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) and Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) crashed at Redgate corner with 18 minutes to go, both riders able to walk back to the paddock uninjured.

Alessandro Andreozzi (Pedercini Kawasaki) made it into Tissot-Superpole by claiming the final spot in 20th  just beating his team mate Romain Lanusse, who is making his World Superbike debut this weekend.

Bryan Staring (Iron Brain Grillini Racing Kawasaki), who replaces Michel Fabrizio for the remainder of the year, will take no further part in the round because of the injury he sustained prior to coming to Donington Park. The Australian rider was unable to fully manoeuvre on the machine, resulting in him withdrawing from the event.

Giugliano Puts Ducati 1199RS Panigale on Front of the Grid, wins second career Tissot-Superpole
Superpole Saturday 24 May 2014 - The Tissot-Superpole sessions ahead of tomorrow’s fifth round races for the 2014 eni FIM World Superbike Championship were held in cold and wet conditions at Donington Park. After yesterday’s dry free practices the FP4 session this morning proved to be all important ahead of the two grid deciding sessions this afternoon.

At the second chequered flag it was Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) who claimed his second career pole position, by lapping the Leicester track in 1’44.903. Joining the Italian rider on the front row in both races tomorrow will be Leon Haslam (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) and Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team).

Row two comprises Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) and Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team). In the session Guintoli, Rea and Giugliano all crashed and remounted after posting their fastest times.

Making it through from Superpole 1, Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia) and Ayrton Badovini (Team Bimota Alstare) joined the already seeded riders after the combined Free Practices. Leon Camier (BMW Motorrad Italia) and Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Kawasaki) both crashed out unhurt at the fast Starkeys section of the track before posting a time. The pair were joined by an unlucky Badovini who also fell spectacularly at the end of the session on the fast uphill left hander, resulting in him not being able to take part in the second session. Niccolò Canepa (Althea Racing Ducati) had a slow speed crash at the Melbourne Hairpin while Fabien Foret (Mahi Team India Kawasaki) elected not to ride in the session.

SuperPole Times (Wet): 1. Giugliano (Ducati) 1'44.903 average 138.059 kph; 2. Haslam (Honda) 1'45.009; 3. Melandri (Aprilia) 1'45.111; 4. Lowes (Suzuki) 1'45.258; 5. Guintoli (Aprilia) 1'45.839; 6. Donnington World Superbike race actionRace One was one of the best races of the season with the first half a 5-way battle for the lead with Tom Sykes back in 10 place some 10 seconds behind and out of sight. At one point all five of these riders held the lead; Baz (76), Lowes (22) Guintoli (50), Giugliano ( 34) and Melandri (33).

Sykes wins opening Race One at Donington Park
Race One, Sunday May 24th - - Reigning champion Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) has won the opening race after a titanic battle with his team mate Loris Baz at Donington Park.

Two great wins from Sykes came in very different circumstances, with Tom way down in 11th place in race one after a poor start, but fighting his way back in brilliant style to catch and hold off team mate Loris Baz by 1.5 seconds at the flag. In Fighting back from a disastrous start Sykes gradually clawed back the deficit to claim his 17th career victory, the third so far this year, ahead of the young Frenchman, with fellow Brit Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) taking a well deserved 3rd at the flag.

Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) crashed out of the leading group on the 16th lap leaving the two Kawasaki’s to fight it out, much to the delight of the crowd. Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team) was a lonely 4th ahead of Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) and Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike Team).

David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) was classified as the first of the EVO riders, finishing in 10th overall. Christian Iddon (Bimota Alstare) and Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) crashed out of contention early on, thankfully without injury.

Sykes heads another Kawasaki 1-2 in Race Two at Donington

Race Two, Sunday May 25th – The second race of the day for the eni FIM Superbike World Championship was once again a close encounter, with reigning World Superbike Champion Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) coming out victorious to take an impressive double in front of his home crowd, just like one year ago.

The 23 lap race then saw a three way fight between Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) and the Kawasaki Racing Team duo Loris Baz and Tom Sykes, with the #1 eventually pulling away in the final laps to claim his 18th career win in the series. Thanks to a masterful performance in both of today’s outings, Sykes now lies on top of the standings, 26 points ahead of Jonathan Rea (Pata Honda World Superbike) and teammate Loris Baz.

Tom Sykes: “Maybe race one was the best race of my career. We had a problem on the first laps of race one and Loris came quite aggressively in turn one. I lost some positions and in the first half a lap, on full lean angle the bike was cutting the power. I almost came into the pits but the Ninja cleared itself and after that the bike was working very well. In race two I knew Loris would have a good pace and Sylvain always goes well round Donington. I just kept pushing and took the lead and then the win. It is great to take another double and also take the championship lead again.”

The leading bunch of riders locked together in the early stages until a clash between first race podium finisher Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) and Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing Team) at the Melbourne Hairpin split the group. Both riders eventually remounted their bikes, with Lowes recovering several places to end up 9th.

Alex Lowes: “Leading my first World Superbike race was mega! Race 1 was good, although I struggled a bit towards the end. It’s the home race for both the team and myself, so I’m pleased with the result. I’m really disappointed about the second race, I had a good pace and I could have had another top 3 finish. I tried my best and I got away with a ninth place, even though my bike was damaged. We have proved we can run at the front and we’ll move on with the confidence gained here at Donington.”

Just as in race one Loris Baz took second position with Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) taking the last podium place after a much stronger second race for the Frenchman. Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team) recovered from his crash earlier to claim 4th.

David Salom (44) fought of Nicholas Canepa (59) for 10th overall both races for the stock engine EVO Class win.

Other factory Ducati rider Chaz Davies was a lonely 5th ahead of Rea who finished 6th. David Salom added to the celebrations for Kawasaki in the EVO category, by once again being the best classified rider, finishing a credible 10th overall. Aaron Yates (Team Hero EBR) and Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) fell before half distance, neither rider sustaining any injury. Laverty however was able to remount and salvage 3 points.

As in the opening race, Leon Camier (BMW Motorrad Italia) and Geoff May (Team Hero EBR) were not on the grid, Camier nursing an injury sustained in yesterday’s Tissot-Superpole, May unable to take part due to an ongoing technical problem.

Next up is Sepang, in Malaysia, on June 8th, for an all-new adventure for the SBK paddock.

Tom Sykes, Team Kawsaaki 1st / 1st - “Yes, maybe race one was the best race of my career. Winning the world title will always be the most emotional one but in terms of performance today maybe the top of the list now. We had a problem on the first laps of race one and Loris came quite aggressively in turn one. I am not complaining but this took away my natural line and I got put onto the marbles. I lost some positions and in the first half a lap, on full lean angle the bike was cutting the power. I almost came into the pits but the Ninja cleared itself and after that the bike was working very well. I was in tenth or 11th position early on and I was very motivated to move back to the where I feel we should be at the front. It was difficult to pass because a lot of guys were using their fresh Pirelli tyres to their full advantage and after six laps I really started to make a plan of attack to win. In race two I had a good start but I knew Loris would have a good pace and Sylvain Guintoli always goes well round Donington. Sylvain led for half the race but I just kept pushing and took the lead and then the win. It is great to take another double after Aragon and also take the championship lead again. The summer weather really arrived back at Donington for my home round today.”

Loris Baz, Team Kawsaaki 2nd / 2nd - “I was happy to be on the podium in race one not disappointed not to win it. I led for some time and I tried to get away. That was the target and I made a good start. I could not make it stick and I could not get away. I tried my best to pass Tom back where I could but I almost lost the front. It was a good race and I am happy for the team. It was clean passing but I just lost the front when I passed Tom. We are racing and on the limit. In race two it was almost the same as race one in that Tom was just too fast in the second part of the race. I could not do anything about that but it was a rewarding day and it is good to leave here 1-2 in the championship with Tom. We can all have a big smile on our faces.”

Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team #34) – DNF, 4th
-“The crash in race one meant that I really wanted to do well in the second. I don’t really know how to explain that crash. I was too far over on the inside heading into the turn and when the bike touched the kerb my glove got caught on the throttle. The bike therefore didn't slow down and I just lost control of it. In race 2, the first laps were difficult and during lap one, to avoid contact with another rider, I lost many positions. I then went after those ahead of me and I’d almost reached Guintoli for third but perhaps in the recovery I’d asked too much of my tyres and so I had to settle for final fourth position.”

David Salom: “I was double best Evo rider today and it was a good result. In the first race I passed Niccolo Canepa in the last corner and won the race. In the second race I pushed hard and with three or four laps to go my hand felt not so good, I was in too much pain and I had no more to give. At the end Niccolo could not get past me and we took another Evo win. We are first in the championship, a few points more ahead, and congratulations to Kawasaki and the team for these good results in Donington.”

Van der Mark in World Supersport 600cc
After a thrilling 20 lap World Supersport race at Donington Park, Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport Team) has taken his second win of the season after a tense final three corners saw him fend off Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta RC-Yakhnich Motorsport). Kev Coghlan (DMC-Panavto Yamaha) was back on the podium, taking the final place on the rostrum after being in the leading fight until the closing stages. Former World Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Team India Kawasaki) suffered another technical problem while leading but unlike in recent races the Turk was able to bring his machine home in… (read more)

Fast Dates Calendar shoot with builder Richard Pollock
ends with 12 Stitches, a Quail Motorcycle Gathering Show Win
and a tribute to movie legend James Dean

Saturday May 17th, 2014 - Congratulations to Richard for taking 1st Place Custom at the Quail Motorcycle Gathering this past weekend with "Ivan the Terrible". Richard's winning bike was one of his renown Triumph Street Trackers with a James Dean Porsche 550 Speedster styling theme that was built on consignment for wealthy Russian motorsports enthusiast Konstantin Drozdov.

Richard Pollock Quail winner 2014

The day before driving up to the Quail Motorcycle Gathering, Richard stopped by the FastDates.com Calendar studios so I could photograph both Ivan, and its more conservative new stable mate, a sweet little Red/Black Triumph Bonneville. Our model for the shoot was sexy new Calendar Kitten Lindsay Hancock who had the attributes to take any wild beast.

Richard nicknamed the winning bike "Ivan the Terrible" in tribute its Russian owner and the fact it was one of the most potent Triumph Twins he'd ever built, putting out 96 dynoed horsepower in its lightened 340 pound chassis. Stock Triumph Twins put out just 64hp and weight nearly 100 pounds more.

Driving back home to Southern California, Richard stopped with the Porsche 550 Spyder themed bike Ivan at the James Dean Memorial Junction of Highways 41 and 46 in the San Joaquin Valley where James Dean was killed in his Porsche 550 Speedster back on September 30, 1955 .

Richard Pollock meanwhile, if he says away from Ivan, promises to have us some cool new custom Streetrackers, along with many other top custom bike builders will again be joining us at the upcoming 2014 LA Calendar Motorcycle Show on Sunday July 20th. You don't want top miss it. - Jim Gianatsis

Michelin to be the new Spec Tire for MotoGP Beginning in 2016
May 23rd - Today Dorna announced that Michelin will take over from Bridgestone as the spec-tire manufacturer in the MotoGP World Championship beginning in 2016 and it turns out that they didn’t have much competition: The French company was the only tire manufacturer to submit a formal tender.

At the beginning of May 2014 Dorna, in agreement with the FIM, opened a tender for tire manufacturers interested in becoming Official Tire Supplier to MotoGP. Interested tire manufacturers were able to request the technical specifications from Dorna’s Managing Director Javier Alonso, with three potential tire suppliers initially expressing an interest – before Michelin alone made a formal tender before the May 22 deadline.
The next step in the process will be the drawing out of a commercial agreement between Dorna and Michelin as Official Tire Supplier, Dorna says, with “Michelin having already clearly proven its technical abilities to respond to the needs of a demanding Grand Prix racing schedule.”

Dunlop Motorsport issued a release today explaining why it didn’t submit a tender to Dorna.

“MotoGP continues to be a very strong global event, and we are proud of our long-standing relationship with the MotoGP organizers through our continued supply to the FIM Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships,” said Sanjay Khanna, the managing director of Dunlop Motorsport and Motorcycle EMEA. “Dunlop is in the fortunate position of having many strong partnerships with motorcycle manufacturers and leading championships around the world. We have taken the decision to focus on developing and supplying tires for these important partners for the immediate future.

“We believe our performance in events where there is open-competition between tire manufacturers, such as road racing and the FIM Endurance World Championship, prove that Dunlop has the capability to win races at the top-level of motorcycle racing. However, with such a diverse range of racing activities already planned for 2015 and beyond, we have chosen not to tender to be the Official MotoGP supplier on this occasion. We do not rule it out as an opportunity in the future.”

High Speed - the Movie
The best motorcycle racing movie ever made! Filmed on location at the World Superbike races , this an exciting romantic drama staring beautiful British actress Sienna Miller.

THROUGH THE ALPINE WONDERLAND OF AUSTRIA AND SOUTHERN GERMANY – THE ALPS AND LAKES MOTORCYCLE TOUR!
The Alps and Lakes motorcycle tour takes you through a beautiful part of European motorcycle paradise; the Alps. The contrast between the beautiful lakes in southern Germany and Austria and the towering mountains that reach up to more than 10,000 ft is nothing less than breathtaking.

This area is the famous background for the movie "Sound of Music“. This vacation offers a little bit of everything: beautiful and relaxing rides through the valleys; some mountain roads and passes; and great vistas and sights, including King Ludwig‘s castle, Herrenchiemsee, and the historic city of Salzburg. The tour consists of five riding days, one of them is a rest day – which means that you stay two nights at the same hotel.

This is a great opportunity to explore a little bit more, ride around the countryside, walk through town, meet the locals and sample some of the local food. The tour will take you through Germany and Austria, and on the rest day you can even add Italy to your list if you are so inclined.

Cypress, CA - April 3, 2014 – Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., is proud to announce that it has signed on as sponsor for the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Shootout Presented By Yamaha, a three-event championship motorcycle road racing series that includes the:
Yamaha SoCal Nationals at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA on April 26-27;
Pacific Nationals at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, CA on May 3-4; and the
Mountain Nationals at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT on May 24-25.
The announcement was made by Bob Starr, General Manager of National Communications for Yamaha’s Motorsports Group.

“All of us at Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., are proud that Yamaha is the presenting sponsor for this new race series,” Starr commented. “We’re excited that our loyal customers and race fans in the Western part of the U.S. will now have three events to attend that are close to their homes, and they’ll be able to see for themselves just how breathtaking professional motorcycle road racing at this level is!”

Keith McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager for Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., added, “I’m excited that Yamaha is now the presenting sponsor for the Shootout and that the fans will get the opportunity to see our Monster Energy Pro Superbike riders Josh Hayes and Cameron Beaubier, as well as our Y.E.S./Monster Energy Pro Sportbike riders Garrett Gerloff and JD Beach, compete in these three race weekends. We’re looking forward to seeing lots of fans come out to support the races and interact with our riders. Stay tuned for more information as the opening round of the Superbike Shootout draws near.”
