Yamaha's 1-2 Punch

MotoGP World Championship, Round 9 of 17, Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland

Yamaha's 1-2 Punch at German MotoGP
German Grand Prix, Sachsenring, Sunday July 19 2009 - Valentino Rossi was never under any illusions that he would have it easy in his defense of the MotoGP world title, and once again the Italian was made to fight for glory at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. The Fiat Yamaha rider took the win at Sachsenring by just 0.099s from persistent rival Jorge Lorenzo in a breathtaking race to extend his lead in the World Championship.

After starting from pole for the first time at the German track, Rossi took the lead of the race after thirteen laps. Both the Italian and teammate Lorenzo eked out an advantage to make it a two-way battle to the chequered flag, with a last lap battle reminiscent of the Barcelona round of the series one month ago. Rossi’s definitive pass had come at the end of the home straight with two laps to go, and he brushed off the young pretender’s overtures for his fourth win of the 2009 season.

Starting from eighth on the grid, Dani Pedrosa had established his credentials in the dry with the best lap in the morning warmup. He had another storming start at Sachsenring to move up to the lead group, and put up a bold fight both amongst and behind the Yamaha duo. The Repsol Honda rider completed the podium with a race time under three seconds down on the top two.

Early leader Casey Stoner’s stamina lasted longer than he had expected in the dry race, and he was able to mount a serious challenge for the win. With five laps to go, however, he was passed by Pedrosa going into the first turn, and one lap later a sit-up meant that he lost touch of the Spaniard.

Alex de Angelis and Toni Elías had a successful salvage operation for the San Carlo Honda Gresini team, placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Elías was particularly impressive, having started from last place.

The only retirees from the race were Randy de Puniet - who crashed on the opening lap - and Andrea Dovizioso. The latter fell victim to excessive front tyre wear and was forced to call it a day before the end of the 30-lap Grand Prix.

250cc GP to Simoncelli
Marco Simoncelli kept his title challenge alive with a win in the 250cc contest, his second victory of his World Championship defense. As in 2008, the Metis Gilera rider broke free from the pack in the early going. This time, however, he had Álex Debón along for the ride. Simoncelli couldn’t shake the Spanish veteran despite his best attempts, although he had enough breathing space to prevent any overtaking moves.

Debón held on to second place, his first rostrum of the 2009 season, whilst behind him a fierce battle developed for the final podium spot. Álvaro Bautista took the trailing group up to his countryman on the final lap, but was unsuccessful in making a move on Debón despite putting in a circuit record lap. He did, however, get past title rival and series leader Hiroshi Aoyama to cut the gap in the standings to ten points.

The race had been restarted after an initial lap when rain fell on the Sachsenring, but during the wait between starts the track was deemed to have dried sufficiently for the majority of riders to change back to slick tyres.

AMA/DMG National Superbike Championship. Round 8 of 11 Mid-Ohio

Josh Hayes Triples AMA Superbike Weeknd at Mid-Ohio

Hayes takes Saturday First Round of AMA Pro Honda Super Cycle Weekend
LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 18, 2009) - Josh Hayes claimed the second AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike presented by Parts Unlimited win of his career, while Eslick earned his fourth AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL victory at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in the first of two doubleheader races at the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tires.

Hayes started from pole position on his No. 4 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Yamaha R1 and lost the lead only once during the 21-lap sprint race on the 2.4-mile track, falling behind the No. 79 Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 of Blake Young in Turn 2 on the first lap. After several attempts at passing Young in Turn 6, Hayes changed his strategy and made the move stick in Turn 1 on Lap 6. The Mississippi native was pressured lap after lap for the remaining fifteen circuits, holding off the pack by just .183 seconds at the finish.

"It started off pretty crazy," said Hayes, whose first American Superbike win came earlier this season at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. "I started off pretty good through Turn 1 and just got trounced before I got to the keyhole, then Blake kind of got out there and took off and ran. It took me a little while to get my wits about me and get to him and get through there and then I just tried to ride smooth, and I just had a lot of fun. It was a good race. There was a lot of pressure the whole way, and the last lap was right up there with every other lap."

Aaron Yates mounted a late-race charge on the No. 23 Brand Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000, overtaking Young in Turn 6 on Lap 15 and running nose-to-tail with Hayes before getting caught up by a lapped rider on Lap 17. Yates cleared the lapped traffic and turned the fastest lap of the race at 1:25.666 on Lap 20 but was unable to take the top spot, finishing in second.

"I felt pretty good about the end of the race, but it was tough getting by a couple guys," said Yates. "We ran up on some lappers just kind of cruising along that wanted to race with the leaders and kind of gave a little gap to Josh there for a little while, but it was fun at the end being able to chase him down. I felt like if I had some clear track, I could have caught back up but I just ran out of laps."

Six-time American Superbike champion Mat Mladin finished third on the No. 7 Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000. Mladin struggled in qualifying and started from ninth before steadily working his way through the field, passing teammate Young on Lap 16 for the final spot on the podium.

"These guys were running a good pace," said Mladin, who has claimed victory in 10 of the season's 13 races. "It's one thing to be able to get up there, but it's another thing to get past. We couldn't do it today and that was it. Obviously it would have made it easier to be a little bit closer on the start. That's the way it goes, we just didn't have the pace today."

Hayes' teammate Ben Bostrom finished fourth on the No. 2 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Yamaha R1 and local favorite and hometown rider Larry Pegram, who hails from Columbus, Ohio, finished fifth aboard the No. 22 Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing Ducati 1098R. Hayden finished sixth in the race and currently trails Mladin by 133 points in the American Superbike point standings, 376-243.

David Anthony (No. 25 Aussie Dave Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000) was involved in an on-track incident during Saturday morning's American Superbike Final Qualifying session. Anthony was evaluated by the track medical center before being transported to MedCentral in Mansfield, Ohio for further evaluation.

Johnny Rock Page has been suspended for the remainder of the Mid-Ohio event, in addition to the Heartland Park Topeka round, for failure to acknowledge the blue flag during the American Superbike race and subsequently impeding the progress of the race leaders.

Saturday's AMA Pro American Superbike race can be seen on SPEED Sunday at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT). Sunday's American Superbike race will close the weekend and will run at 4:00 p.m. local time.

Josh Hayes Sweeps AMA Pro Races in Honda Super Cycle Weekend at Mid-Ohio
Earns First SuperSport Victory; First Back-to-Back Wins for Yamaha since 1994

LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 19, 2009) - Josh Hayes started from pole and swept the Honda Super Cycle Weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, earning his third career AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike presented by Parts Unlimited victory in Sunday's race. Danny Eslick matched Hayes' effort, claiming victory in a hard-fought AMA Pro Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL battle earlier in the day.

Hayes has an accomplished history at the 2.4-mile course and this weekend proved to be a continuation for the two-time Formula Xtreme champion. After claiming Superpole on Friday, Hayes held off a hard-charging pack of riders led by Aaron Yates' No. 23 Brand Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 in Saturday's American Superbike race for the win. Sunday saw a compelling performance by Hayes, as he held off teammate Ben Bostrom's No. 2 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Yamaha R1 to mark the first time in 15 years that a Yamaha rider has earned three wins in an American Superbike season. The last rider to complete the milestone was two-time World Superbike champion and MotoGP star Colin Edwards in 1994.

"This is what Superbike racing is supposed to be," said Hayes, who earned his first American Superbike victory at Infineon Raceway earlier this year. "One lap I had a full second gap, and the rest of the time I had these guys breathing down my neck. This is what you feel good about; when you go home you know that you put it all out there, that these guys were having a good day too and you came out on top. It doesn't matter how much you win by, it's the difference between racing and just going fast around a race track."

Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider Tommy Hayden won the hole shot on the No. 22 Suzuki to start the 21-lap sprint race, but gave up the point to Hayes in Turn 6 on the first lap. Hayes lost the lead only briefly, falling behind Bostrom in Turn 6 on Laps 8 and 11 only to retake control of the field in the next corner. Bostrom held off the remainder of the lead pack to finish .987 seconds behind Hayes.

"We had a very good bike today," said Bostrom. "It seems like when you brake on the inside, you never seem to make the corner, and Josh is real smart, very savvy. He just kind of high-lowed me back up there, so I tried to get on the gas pretty hard the second time and came pretty far out of the saddle. I thought I was going to jump on his bike. I just settled down and tried to follow him and figured I'd just make a run on him in the end. I felt like my bike was incredible."

Hayden looked to the inside of Bostrom in Turn 6 several times during the second half of the race in an attempt to take second, but was never able to get the No. 22 Suzuki into a position to complete the pass. The Kentucky native scored his seventh podium of the season on Sunday.

"I couldn't get around those guys," said Hayden. "They were pushing really hard. Towards the middle of the race I kind of felt like I needed to get by and then if I could, I thought maybe I could up the pace a little bit. The last five laps it was getting pretty difficult just to hold on. We each had our part of the race where our bikes were working a little bit better. In the end I had to follow those guys home."

Blake Young was the final rider in the lead pack, finishing in fourth place aboard the No. 79 Rockstar/Makita Suzuki GSX-R1000. Columbus, Ohio native Larry Pegram's No. 72 Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing Ducati 1098R rounded out the top five after trading fifth position with Michael Laverty's No. 8 Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 four times in the final 10 laps.

Championship leader Mat Mladin finished seventh on the No. 7 Rockstar/Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 and leads Hayden by 126 points in the American Superbike championship standings.

BRNO World Superbike Preview 10th ROUND
JULY 24-26th 2009

Three-way battle between Haga, Spies and Fabrizio resumes at Brno

Brno, Tuesday 21 July 2009 -The Hannspree FIM Superbike World Championship heads to the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic this coming weekend for the tenth round of this year’s series. The Czech Round is the last event before the summer break, which will be a well-deserved opportunity for teams and riders to get some rest in view of the final four-round rush to the finish starting in September.

The 5.403 km Brno track is a particularly challenging circuit, with constant uphill and downhill sections that provide a severe test-bed for both man and machine. World Superbike has raced at Brno six times in the past: first sporadically in 1993 and 1996, and then a constant fixture since 2005. Three of the four recent editions have been dominated by four-cylinder machines, especially Suzuki who have won four races since 2005 thanks to Yukio Kagayama (2), Troy Corser and Max Biaggi, with the score completed by wins for James Toseland (Honda) and Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha). Last season the trend was inverted and Ducati, who had suffered in previous years, this time dominated the two races, placing five riders in the top 6 and giving a double win to Troy Bayliss.

HAGA GRITS HIS TEETH – In 2008 Noriyuki Haga failed to shine at Brno, and even this time things don’t look too promising for the championship leader. Haga comes to the Czech circuit in not the best of physical condition following his crash at Donington, and most probably will be playing a defensive game. But the Japanese rider, who is rapidly recovering from a broken wrist and scapula, has often accustomed the WSB world to miraculous recoveries and he will certainly be doing everything within his powers to defend his points lead. His closest rivals for the title, Ben Spies (Yamaha World Superbike) and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) will be looking to take advantage of the situation; the Texan is getting closer and closer to the top of the championship and his minimum aim is to reduce the 14-point gap at the top, and continue the run of 10 wins in 18 races this season. Fabrizio will have a dual role at Brno. On the one hand he will have to take points away from Spies to help his team-mate Haga, while on the other he will have to go on the attack because the world title is still a possibility seeing as he is just 51 points behind Haga, with 250 still up for grabs. Brno is a track that has always brought the best out of the young Italian, and now he is constantly up amongst the front-runners he is one of the favourites together with Spies.

OUTSIDERS – The formidable trio at the top are coming under attack from a series of rivals, including the increasingly competitive Hondas of Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate) and Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing). In the recent test at Imola, the Northern Ireland youngster - and Misano winner - showed himself to be back on the ball again after the disappointment of Donington, and the ups and downs of Brno, where he won last year on a Supersport Honda, have the right characteristics to bring out the best in him. As for Haslam, the British rider is having an outstanding season and will surely be one of the protagonists in the Czech Round. As will Jakub Smrz (Ducati Guandalini), who will be aiming for a podium at his home circuit. The list of outsiders also includes Shane Byrne (Sterilgarda Ducati), Tom Sykes (Yamaha World Superbike) and Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda).

BMW UP, APRILIA STABLE – The official Imola tests highlighted the progress made by BMW, despite a few problems for Troy Corser. The new spec engine gave a positive response and Ruben Xaus was able to set the seventh best time overall. It will be used at Brno and the two riders are confident they can get closer to the podium zone. At Imola on the other hand the Aprilias were in some difficulty, and neither Max Biaggi nor Shinya Nakano were on the pace. The Italian squad comes to Brno after a positive pre-Donington test and can in any case count on Biaggi, who is always quick at this track where he won in 2007.

NEUKIRCHNER OUT AGAIN – It has been a decidedly unfortunate season for Max Neukirchner (Suzuki Alstare BRUX). The German, who was back on the bike for the first time at Imola following his crash at Monza, was the victim of a bad crash again, in which he suffered a fractured vertebra. Neukirchner will have to wear a torso cast for at least 40 days, after which a check will be made on his condition. At Brno for the moment the Suzuki Alstare team line up only includes Yukio Kagayama.

SUPERSPORT – Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport) starts the Brno weekend as the man to beat. In the recent tests the points leader confirmed himself to be the rider most in form and he will be aiming for his third win in a row, which would take him ever closer to the world title. The other two men still in with a chance are Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda), 28 points behind, and Kenan Sofuoglu (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), who has to win if he wants to continue to go for the title. Team-mate and reigning champion Andrew Pitt is still looking for his first decent result this year, while Fabien Foret (Yamaha World Supersport) and young Spaniard Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Provec) will also be up at the front. One team that is on the up is ParkinGo Triumph Be1 Racing, who scored the marque’s first podium in Supersport at Donington and who will be hoping for a repeat performance from Garry McCoy and Gianluca Nannelli at Brno. Italian Massimo Roccoli races for a Czech team, so will also be looking for a good result in front of Intermoto Honda’s home crowd.

SUPERSTOCK – The Superstock 1000 FIM Cup is gearing up for the sixth round of an exciting series, with three riders - Xavier Simeon (Ducati Xerox), Claudio Corti (Suzuki Alstare) and Maxime Berger (Ten Kate Honda) – all fighting hard for the title. All three are separated by 23 points and the race should be a hard-fought one, with the Belgian and the Frenchman having already won here. Corti on the other hand comes to Brno after setting the quickest time at Imola. Possible outsiders include Javi Fores (Kawasaki Pedercini), Sylvain Barrier (Garnier Junior Yamaha) and above all Davide Giugliano, who makes his debut for the Celani Suzuki team. In the European Superstock 600 Championship, Danilo Petrucci (Yamaha Trasimeno) will be the rider to beat, with Gino Rea (Ten Kate Honda) and Marco Bussolotti (Yamaha Trasimeno) his main rivals, and as always Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Yamaha) and Eddi La Marra (Honda Lorini) the outsiders.

MotoGP prepares for final Donington visit
British Grand Prix
Preview 7/ 21
This weekend sees the end of an era in the FIM MotoGP World Championship, as the series makes its final visit to Donington Park for the British Grand Prix. The venue has played host to some great racing in all classes and, with competition at a breathtaking level in 2009, another thriller can be expected on Sunday 26th July.

Standings leader Valentino Rossi has his own fond memories of Donington Park, the scene of his first premier class victory back in 2000. He has not won at the track since 2005, but is undoubtedly capable of ending the drought in front of a crowd that have always been heavily behind the MotoGP World Champion.

Rossi holds a 14 point advantage at the head of the standings, adding a fourth win to his 2009 tally with victory in Germany just days ago. His principal challenger so far this year has been Fiat Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo, whom he ousted for the triumph in Sachsenring by just 0.099s. Lorenzo has won once at Donington Park, in the 2006 250cc race, and placed sixth at the track last year, although previous form counts for little when talking about the flying Spaniard this season, as he seeks to extend a run of six consecutive podium finishes.

A further 14 points separates Ducati Marlboro’s Casey Stoner from the head of the overall classification. The Australian is still out of sorts with illness, but has kept up his title challenge with some gritty performances over the past month. Off the podium for the past two races, a return to Donington Park gives Stoner the chance to win his third Grand Prix in as many years on British soil.

Dani Pedrosa’s bid for the MotoGP crown has picked up as his own physical problems have healed, but the Repsol Honda man is still very much the outside bet of the top four. He needs to pull back forty points just to catch up with third-placed Stoner. Pedrosa’s last win in Britain came back in his rookie season of 2006, riding the 990cc RC211V.

The British Grand Prix is a home race for James Toseland, who has double motivation to get a good result on race day. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider is racing for his future in the MotoGP World Championship, and also has some demons to exorcise following his first lap crash in last year’s race.

Although Marco Melandri has since relocated to Italy, the former MotoGP runner-up can also count this weekend’s round as a ‘home’ race. He spent a handful of years living just a stone’s throw from the track before the start of this year. He is currently sixth in the standings, behind Toseland’s teammate Colin Edwards.

IMOLA – OFFICIAL WORLD SUPERIKE TEST
Imola, 15 July 14-15th 2009

Fabrizio blitzes Superbike field in day 1 at Imola
Michale Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) stormed to the top slot in the first day of official Superbike group testing at the Autodromo di Imola today. After 265 minutes of heat-sapping track action at the revised Santerno circuit, the young Italian slammed in an impressive time of 1 minute 49.164 seconds in the final seconds to edge Ben Spies (Yamaha World Superbike) off the top slot. Fabrizio is running singleton for the Ducati factory squad at Imola as points leader Noriyuki Haga is scheduled to return at Brno following his recent Donington crash.

“On the last lap I put on a new tyre to set my time, one of the development tyres that Pirelli brought along for this extreme heat” declared Fabrizio. “We worked a lot on the set-up, something we’ve never managed to do really well during the championship, and we worked on the traction control to try and get the best out of the engine in view of Brno. I really wanted to prove to Ben that I’m right there with him. There are still five rounds left and I think he realizes that by now!”

Right throughout the day the battle had been between Spies and Fabrizio, but they were joined at the end by a group of riders who also set impressive times. Next up was Britain’s Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), just five-tenths down on the front man, while Ruben Xaus (BMW Motorrad) showed great progress for the German squad by powering through into an impressive fourth slot with his quickest time of the day in the closing stages. Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), fastest in the morning, maintained his good form in the afternoon, improving his time to end up fifth.

Three Brits took the next three positions, but all were over the 1m50s mark, Shane Byrne (Sterilgarda Ducati) coming in ahead of Tom Sykes (Yamaha World Superbike) and Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing Honda), while Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati DFX) and Yukio Kagayama (Suzuki Alstare BRUX) completed the top ten runners. Max Neukirchner (Suzuki Alstare BRUX) eased himself back into the WSB scene with an encouraging 14th position, but there was little joy today for Aprilia Racing, as Shinya Nakano and Max Biaggi could only take their RSV4 machines to 12th and 17th respectively.

In the Supersport sessions, Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport) proved to be too strong for the opposition on the first day, the Coventry man posting a time that was six-tenths quicker than Kenan Sofuoglu (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda). Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) hauled himself up to third place, one tenth behind, Fabien Foret (Yamaha World Supersport) also lapped within a second of the leader to finish fourth, just ahead of Mark Aitchison (Honda Althea) in fifth.

Rea grabs top slot in two-day WSB test at Imola, Neukirchner injured again
Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) put in a quick lap right at the end of the two-day official Superbike test to take the top slot at a sweltering Imola track in preparation for the round here on September 27. The Northern Ireland youngster set a time of 1 minute 48.670 seconds around the 4.936 km circuit to edge out Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox), who had been quickest until then, from the top slot by two-tenths of a second. Texan Ben Spies finished third overall, the Yamaha World Superbike man not improving on his time from yesterday. Points leader and the only other WSB race winner this year Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox) did not take part in the test as he is recovering for the next round at Brno.

“It’s really motivational coming to a new circuit and finding your feet” declared Rea. “Our approach was a bit different than normal in that we forgot about setting up the bike and getting me up to speed first. Now we’ve had a lot of time on the bike the package is very strong and finally I’m happy after we went round in circles a bit at Donington. The team has put a massive effort into it, so a big thanks to them for everything. I put my fastest time in on a qualifier, but we’ve been consistently fast on both days, in the top 5, and I did a long-run and the tyre was pretty good so hopefully they can bring that for the race. Where we are right now is good so I’m really happy.”

Max Neukirchner, back on his Alstare Suzuki for the first time since the Monza incident, high-sided at the Tamburello ninety minutes into the morning session. He was stretchered to the medical centre but a further X-ray scan at Imola hospital revealed a D12 dorsal vertebra fracture in his lower back as well as three minor cracks in the right L1, L2 and L3 lumbar vertebrae. Neukirchner will return to Germany and must remain at total rest in a plaster cast for 30 days.

Fourth place went to Ducati DFX Corse’s Lorenzo Lanzi, who was perfectly at home around his local circuit, while Tom Sykes (Yamaha World Superbike) also made progress in today’s morning session to move up to fifth. John Hopkins (Stiggy Racing Honda) ran well this morning to finish sixth, but was then advised to sit out the afternoon session as his recent injuries are still not fully healed. Ruben Xaus (BMW Motorrad) made considerable progress over the two days, moving his S1000 RR up the timesheets to finish seventh overall, but team-mate Troy Corser could only manage seventeenth. Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing Honda), Shane Byrne (Sterilgarda Ducati) and Shinya Nakano (Aprilia Racing) completed the top 10, the Italian factory outfit preferring to concentrate on a major parts evaluation session rather than go for outright times.

Overall Times: 1. Rea J. (GBR) Honda CBR1000RR 1'48.670; 2. Fabrizio M. (ITA) Ducati 1098R 1'48.847; 3. Spies B. (USA) Yamaha YZF R1 1'49.262; 4. Lanzi L. (ITA) Ducati 1098R 1'49.309; 5. Sykes T. Heartland Park Topeka Track Revisions Complete in Advance of AMA Pro Road Racing's Return
LEXINGTON, Ohio (July 21, 2009) - A full schedule of AMA Pro Road Racing events will be held during Heartland Park Topeka's Tornado Nationals presented by BriggsAuto.com on a track that has been put through a full slate of modifications and safety improvements, including an important change planned for 2010 that has been made now.

Through the ongoing efforts and cooperation of Heartland Park Topeka officials, the AMA Pro Rider Safety Committee and AMA Pro Road Racing, the 2.5-mile Kansas road course is a full-year ahead of schedule in regards to suggested track modifications and improvements. In addition to a list of completed 2009 modifications, Heartland Park and AMA Pro officials announced today the Turn 1 Alpha wall - which was not scheduled to come down until next year - has been removed in time for the Tornado Nationals.

"As I have heard the news of what I was earlier told could not be done, I'm excited to hear that Heartland Park has decided to remove a wall in the Turn 1 Alpha section of the race track," said Rider Safety Committee member Josh Hayes. "As this was clearly the fastest area of the track, it was of the greatest concern. I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but to hear that the track took our rider safety on as such an important issue is something I hope more tracks look to mimic in the future. I'm excited to get to Heartland Park and start riding."

Hayes has won three AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike presented by Parts Unlimited races this year on his No. 4 Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Yamaha R1, including a sweep of both finals this past weekend at Mid-Ohio.

"Heartland Park Topeka has always strived to provide the best and safest racing facility possible," said Heartland Park Topeka owner Raymond Irwin. "In today's tough economy the timing of when changes can be accomplished is more critical than ever. However, when it comes to safety, all other issues take a back seat. We are excited about our event with the AMA Superbikes and we know that the Tornado Nationals will be a great event for both Heartland and our community. The most recent changes are just one step in our constant efforts to develop Heartland Park Topeka into a destination our fans and competitors consider a 'must attend' event."

Rider Safety Committee members and AMA Pro staff visited Heartland Park Topeka twice in the last few months in order to provide recommendations for modifications to the facility. The Tornado Nationals will be Round 9 of the 2009 AMA Pro Road Racing season, July 31 - August 2, and will mark the return of major-league motorcycle road racing to Heartland Park for the first time since 1991.
