Edelweiss High Alpine Motorcycle Tour
NARROW TWISTIES AND HAIRPIN TURNS ARE SOME FEATURES OF THIS HIGH ALPINE MOTORCYCLE TOUR.
If you’re looking for a one week get-away to the most demanding roads in the Alps, this motorcycle tour is made for you! Experience the excitement of serpentine roads, mammoth mountains, and Alpine, Disney-like villages on the roads between Munich, Germany and the Grossglockner Pass in Austria!

A session of Alps Riding Training will acquaint you with traffic rules and how best to negotiate those hairpin turns. On our first day of our motorcycle tour we ride from Munich to the Grossglockner Pass where we contend with our first switchbacks. Jagged rock formations that soar to the sky are framed by twisting, well-maintained roads, that you can see for miles while climbing the next pass. Our second day brings you to a riding loop through the Dolomites, a region in the Italian Alps noted for its spectacular scenery.

Day three delivers the road you’ve come to Europe to ride: Stilfser Joch/Passo di Stelvio. Often referred to by European motorcyclists as “the Mother Road,” this pass has 39 switchbacks on one side and 48 on the other! Set your own pace with your new found friends on this tour. Sweeping through three countries; Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria, the next day’s ride will thrill you with its spectacular views and a fabulous Edelweiss picnic, served in a beautiful area surrounded by the soaring peaks of the Alps. On your last riding day, you visit Neuschwanstein, the fairy tale castle of King Ludwig. This week goes by quickly, but the memories will stay with you for a lifetime!

Mecom Austion Monterey MV Agusta1953 MV Agusta 125cc Grand Racer

Mecum Auction Monterey MV Agusta Catalog Online
Mecum Auctions will be selling the Gary Kohs MV Agusta Collection - the most comple post war collection of MV Agusta Motorcycles in the world, at their Montery, CA Auction on August 16th-18th. The complete collection is to be sold as a single lot, so briong a thick check book. They've produced a beautiful catalog of the MV Collection which you can now view online: http://issuu.com/mecumauction/docs/mv_catalog

Mecum Auctions has consigned the impressive MV Agusta Collection to their 2012 auction in Monterey, California comprised of 71 machines ranging from a 1946 MV 98 “3 Velocita” race model, to a 2007 MV F4 1000/312 Bonneville. This one-of-a-kind gathering of exquisite motorcycles is the result of collector Gary Kohs’ lifelong mission to acquire only the very finest examples of what many consider to be the “Ferrari of the motorcycle world,” and has assembled an amazing collection of Count Giovanni Agusta’s legacy of rolling Italian art. This unprecedented offering at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Saturday August 18, 2012 will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the finest motorcycle collections in the world as a single lot on the auction block.

“A collection of this scale, depth, and quality is a rare accomplishment worthy of international celebration,” says Gavin Trippe, motorcycle division manager at Mecum Auctions. “It is essentially a complete museum exhibit poised for showcasing MV Agusta’s mark of excellence that can be displayed in less than 5,000 square feet of space. We are pleased that Mr. Kohs has entrusted Mecum to offer his world-class collection at our auction in Monterey. Headlined by the 1953/54 ex-works 125 Grand Prix Racer, winner of the Isle of Man TT, virtually every model of motorcycle, race bike, scooter, and agricultural tricycle from the MV factory is represented. This could easily be considered the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Collector and enthusiast Gary Kohs comments, “This is not just a collection of motorcycles, this is a collection of art, and I’m thrilled that Dana Mecum and his staff agree that keeping it together as one is so important. MV Agusta is the only marque that can truly represent the post-war history of the motorcycle, and I look forward to sharing it all with the international motorcycle community.”

The MV Agusta Collection will be on display for preview during the month of May in Indianapolis, Ind., as well as Monterey, Calif. in July and August during MotoGP at Laguna Seca, and will remain on display in Monterey until the auction Aug. 16-18. For the most up to date information, schedule of events, preview times, visit www.mecum.com/mvagusta or call 262.275.5050.

Jorge Lorenzo podium silverstone photo picture

MotoGP World Championship Championship, Round 6 of 18, Silverstone, England

Lorenzo decisive at Silverston in 3rd consecutive season victory
Silverstone, England, June 17th 2012 - In a day that once again saw three fantastic races across the MotoGP™ classes at the Hertz British Grand Prix at Silverstone, it was Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo who recorded a hard-fought victory in the premier-class ahead of Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa. The predicted rain stayed away for the MotoGP grid as Yamaha’s Ben Spies took the holeshot ahead of Repsol Honda Team’s Stoner and San Carlo Honda Gresini’s pole-sitter Álvaro Bautista. Spies made a tremendous start leading the early stages from Stoner, Bautista and Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden. Lorenzo lost a place in the first bends, and was soon leading a separated group for fifth place.

With 17 laps remaining Lorenzo started to find his rhythm as he looked to close the gap to the front four, followed by Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Andrea Dovizioso and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa. Soon after, Stoner made a move past Spies, as the Texan made a mistake, going too hot into a turn.

More overtaking was to follow, as Lorenzo took advantage of a gap left by Hayden to hunt down Bautista. With Stoner having pulled out a small gap at the front, Lorenzo did not want his rival to get away and forced his way past Bautista, relegating the San Carlo rider into fourth. The tussle was not to stop, as Lorenzo stormed past his teammate into second, with Spies being overtaken by Bautista as well a corner later.

With 11 laps left Lorenzo was closing in on the rear wheel of Stoner, starting a thrilling battle for top spot. On the same lap Dovizioso crashed out of his positions, while his teammate Cal Crutchlow fought past LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl into seventh. Heading into lap nine, Lorenzo took Stoner on the final turn, yet the Australian fought straight back in the next turn, as the pair kept the crowd on their toes with some thrilling moves.

A lap further on, the duo of Pedrosa and Bautista started to slowly close the gap on Stoner, who looked to be slowing. With six laps left it turned into a three-way battle for second place, as Lorenzo was opening a gap at the front. The Spaniard suffered a slight scare with four laps left as he was almost thrown from his bike, but he managed to save it and retain the lead, albeit with a reduced gap to the pursuing Stoner. In the latter stages there were thrilling battles further back as Crutchlow battled past Hayden into sixth, and Power Electronics Aspar pair Aleix Espargaró and Randy de Puniet were fairing to fairing until the finish line.

In the end it was Lorenzo who held his nerve to cross the finish line first to take the top step of the podium and extend his championship lead, ahead of Stoner and Pedrosa who complete the rostrum. Stoner stated after the race he felt there was an issue with his rear tyre. Fourth went to Álvaro Bautista, ahead of Ben Spies, and Cal Crutchlow, who put in a brave ride with his injury. The top ten were completed Hayden, Bradl, Ducati’s Rossi and Pramac Racing Team’s Héctor Barberá. Top CRT spot once again went to Espargaró ahead of his teammate in 11th, while Dovizioso remounted after his crash to finish 19th.

Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha: 1st - “Today was a very difficult race, the front guys were very strong and very fast so it was very hard for me to catch them and stay with them. Little by little the rear tyre drops a bit more, I had good confidence and I was faster than them and I started to catch them. When I caught up I didn’t want to crash so I waited for my moment and was patient. When I caught Casey we had a wonderful fight, luckily for us I had a better pace and I passed him. Four laps from the end I made a big mistake and almost crashed! I’m very happy with the result, and for the team who gave me a good bike again.”

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda: 2nd - “It wasn’t a great race for us today, we saw the pace the Yamahas had in the early laps and it was really worrying to me. As early as lap three the bike wasn’t feeling good, especially on the left side, the tyre destroyed itself almost immediately. My plan was to try and get to the front and hold them up, but Ben was proving difficult to pass, then he made a small mistake and I was able to slip through and I tried to hold it from there. We knew we didn’t have a better pace than the other riders and it wouldn’t be long until they were on us, so I did what I could to stay in front. We were losing so much grip on the edge of the tyre that we had no mid-corner speed and we were having to make up for this with the entry and a clean exit, which made things difficult. Today we needed a little more grip and we would have been able to fight for the win, but looking at the rear tyres at the end of the race, there was definitely something wrong with ours.”

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 3rd - “I have mixed feelings after this race. I’m happy to be on the podium at this circuit for several reasons: it’s a track where I have always struggled a lot. We had a very tough weekend – It wasn’t easy for us to learn the circuit and set up the bike with these weather conditions. Also, I didn’t have one of my best race starts. I was seventh on the first lap, but I managed to remain calm and get faster lap after lap, maintaining my rhythm. I saw that Jorge was the man to follow, so I managed to pass Dovizioso, Bautista and Spies and caught Casey, who was second. But at this time, Jorge was gone and I tried twice to pass Casey, but he pulled a little again and in the last chicane, I tried to overtake him, but I had a flash in my mind and I saw both Repsol Hondas on the ground, so I settled for third place. It’s positive to both be on the podium if we consider that it’s the first race for the team with this new front tyre, but for the championship it is not good. We need to make a step forward to solve the problems we have with the chattering because right now, Jorge is too strong for the Hondas.”

Max Biaggi Misano PodiumMax Biaggi celebrated double race win victories at Misano.

Eni World Superbike Championship, Round 7 of 14, Misano, Italy

Biaggi Doubles at home in Misano to extend his Superbike points lead

Misano, Italy, June 8-10th, 2012 – There were two distinct Max Biaggis today at Misano, both winning on the Adriatic circuit during the seventh 2012 World SBK round. After taking race 1, battling at every curve with the best riders in World SBK (he started from the tenth spot on the grid), Biaggi had the satisfaction of dominating race 2 in true Biaggi style, that is, demonstrating an unsustainable pace for all his rivals right from the start.

Starting once again from the third row, this time Max completed part of his masterpiece already in the first lap. Lying in fifth place after just a few curves, he rode his Aprilia RSV4 to third place by the end of the first lap.
Overtaking Rea in the second lap and then front runner Sykes in the third, Max literally widened the gap with a series of fast laps that led to an advantage of more than seven seconds. He was followed across the finish line by Rea and Haslam.
It was a long, beautiful, victorious ride that sealed an important day for the five time world champion and the Aprilia Racing Team. Now, at the championship halfway mark, Max strengthens his lead in the standings with 210.5 points. Behind him are Rea at 172 (- 38.5 points) Sykes at 164.5 (- 46), Melandri at 155.5 (- 55) and Checa at 150.5 (- 60).

At the end of the day Max Biaggi made no secret of his satisfaction: “It was an amazing weekend. After Superpole which forced me to start from the third row, as we able to stay focused and express myself well during the race. After the test sessions I chose a tyre which wasn't the fastest as far as lap times go, but the one that gave me more confidence. In any case I had to take some risks because there are very few places to overtake here, but in the end I was successful and I'm leaving Misano with an incredible double win. I'd like to thank the guys on the Team who always work well and I would like to dedicate this victory to my girlfriend Eleonora and my son Leon, who was here at the track for the first time to see me race”.

2012 Ducati 1199RS Panigale Superbike

Yes Virginia, there is a Panigale World Superbike...
Revealing the 2013 Ducati 1199 RS World Superbike

Shown here is essentially the 2013 Ducati 1199RS World Superbike which will race in the eniSBK World Superbike Championship next year 2013. This 1199RS race bike shown here was delivered in March 2012 at Ducati UK to one of the British Superbike Championship team owners to race in this year's BSB Championship.

Slightly confusing is the RS model designation which in past years the Ducati "R" denoted a special Ducati Superbike production model that had to be built in quantities of 500 to homologate it for FIM WSBK racing with special parts like a different Bore x Stroke, Titanium rods and valves in the engine, and a frame with steering angle adjustment. However, because of current tighter WSBK rules these days, all the factory bikes are much closer to stock, and according to Ducati Corse Team manager Ernesto Marinelli, there is no need in the foreseeable future for Ducati to homologate a special Panigale R model.

Ducati 1199RS Superbike

Keep in mind that Carlos Checa and the other Ducati 1198RS riders in this year's 2012 WSBK Championship are running with 52mm Intake restrictors on their engine's Testastretta's stock 58mm engine Throttle Bodies to keep the power down to 195hp. The new generation Panigale 1199 Superquadro engine makes this HP stock, and more with the Termignoni exhaust system installed. Carlos could have been racing the 1199RS this year if he wanted, but he felt comfortable on his 1198 RS11 World Championship winner and didn't want to have to develop a new race bike from scratch. On the 119RS model shown here, the engine is stock, except for the optional Ducati Performance full-race Termignoni Exhaust System which anyone can order from their Ducati dealer for a staggering US $3,600.

The Ohlins equipped 1199RS race bike does not use the 1199S model electronic adjustable suspension. The carbon fibre bits and the Corse Foot Control Kit are available from your local Ducati Dealer.

Despite the stock engine, this 1199RS gets the designation "RS" because it is a Ducati Corse race shop built bike with special parts like the headlight deleted carbon fibre bodywork and mount brackets, different wiring harness, possibly a larger capacity top-vented aluminum fuel tank, and higher cost Ohlins Reservoir Superbike forks. The RS model does not uses the electronically adjusted Ohlins Shock and Forks as found on the production 1199S model, but reverts back to screw adjustment because a race bike doesn't need such a wide-range of street/track adjustability and the added complication.

Another interesting thing we noticed is that the 1199RS, as well as Carlos Checa's and the other Ducati2012 WSBK 1198RS racers are using the new lightweight Brembo Monoblock 4-piston front brake calipers and rotors that come stock on the stock Panigale 1199 bike. They're mated up to slightly lighter race rotors with a pure steel brake surface for better bite.

All the 1199RS special parts are available from the Ducati Corse Racing Parts Department and are featured in their online catalogs. Most important for us are the optional offset front fork steering stems so you can quicken up the stock 1199's bike's rather slow steering 24.5° fork angle to a quicker 23.5° angle. Corse RS Parts are only sold to established Ducati race teams, but some of the parts like the carbon fibre bits and the Corse Foot Control Kit are available as DP Accessories from your local Ducati Dealer.

Below: Click for a close up look at the 1199RS Parts Catalog. Note the 2 optional offset fork steering stems, which look to work in conjunction with old style 1198RS triple clamps. The catalog parts page on engine parts looks to be all stock parts. In future years new R homologation /RS race bikes get higher compression pistons, hotter cams, and a carbon fibre or Magnesium front sub frame (instead of the stock aluminum one used now), but with Ducati's current FIM horsepower and weight restrictions, they just aren't need.

Carmel, California, May 3-6 2012 - I hadn't ridden a motorcycle up the beautiful California coast from Los Angeles in a few years, and the occasion of the 2012 Quail Motorcycle gathering in Carmel, California, offered the perfect opportunity to make amends. I also wanted to ride up to the Quail event to do some marketing for our upcoming LA Calendar Motorcycle Show, hang out with my friends Jim Giuffra and Shelby Thompson from AFT Customs who are regular participants and bike building winners at the Calendar Show, and to see what other opportunities might pop up.

Yamaha Confirms Lorenzo in MotoGP for 2013-2014
Yamaha MotoGP Team Release June 12th - It is with great pleasure that Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd can confirm the extension of Jorge Lorenzo’s contract to ride for the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team for 2013 and 2014.

Jorge Lorenzo joined Yamaha in 2008, achieving fourth place in his first season and claiming the Rookie of the Year title. He was then second in 2009, went on to become MotoGP World Champion in 2010 and was second again in 2011.

Lorenzo currently leads the 2012 MotoGP Championship by 20 points having taken three victories from the first five completed races of the 18 race series.

Jorge Lorenzo - “I am extremely happy to have signed with Yamaha for two more years. They’ve made great efforts to retain me in the factory team so I want to thank all those involved at Yamaha for this. I’ve been treated like part of the Yamaha family since 2008 and I love working with them. It has always been my first option to stay here and so I’m happy that this important negotiation has finished with such a positive outcome. Now I can focus on the Championship and I’m looking forward to paying back Yamaha’s trust in me starting at Silverstone this weekend. I look forward to winning many more Championships together; my dream to finish my career with Yamaha is now closer to becoming a reality!”

Lin Jarvis, Yamaha Motor Racing Managing Dorector - “This is excellent news for Yamaha and for the Yamaha Factory Racing Team,” commented Lin Jarvis. Jorge has been with us since 2008 and achieved superb results in the first four years, the highlight being his World Championship victory in 2010. He’s currently on top form having won three of the first five GP races and finishing second in the other two. Jorge’s contract extension allows both him and Yamaha to concentrate 100% on this year’s Championship challenge without any distractions and also to make future plans together to further strengthen the winning partnership.”

Editor's Note: With Lorenzo's early season confirmation by Yamaha, it mean's there are far fewer qualified canidates to fill retiring World Champion Casey Stoner's #1 seat at Honda HRC.
The short list would seem to be a return to Honda by either Valentino Rossi or Andrea DovizIoso in the MotoGP ranks, or a relative newcommer from somewhere else.
